The symptoms include coughing up blood or fluid buildup around the lungs. It can also affect the abdomen's lining (peritoneal mesothelioma) or the heart (pericardial mesothelioma).

The chances of a person developing mesothelioma are affected by many factors which include the amount of time they were exposed to asbestos and their gender. Men are more likely to contract this disease than women, and a person's age is another factor. A family history is also a risk factor. Certain asbestos-related illnesses have been linked with specific genes. Mesothelioma is more frequent in those who have experienced radiation to their chest, or those who have a parent or a sibling with the disease. The majority of mesothelioma patients are older than 60 years old.
