The process of making carbon fiber is complicated, and requires a substantial investment in equipment and expertise. The process starts with a polymeric precursor, which provides the molecular basis for carbon-rich carbon fibers. Historically, this was pitch or rayon. Today, the majority of carbon fibers are made from polyacrylonitrile (PAN), which is produced from the chemicals used in everyday life, propylene and ammonia.

Once carbon fiber is manufactured it can be shaped and layered into composite materials to create a wide variety of products. By adjusting the temperature of the material, you can adjust its strength and stiffness. For instance, a carbon fiber can be heated to increase its tensile strength as well as modulus of elasticity. It is also machinized to create voids and holes which decrease its tensile strength but increases its modulus of elastic.

Carbon fiber is naturally resistant to oxidation, which shields it from the damage caused by corrosion. It also has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than metal, which means that it is less likely to change shape in response to heat. The properties of fatigue are superior to those of metal, therefore, carbon fiber will last longer than metal counterparts.

Carbon fiber is utilized in the tailplanes and the fuselage of aircraft. The strength and lightweight weight of the material have allowed designers to make planes that are more efficient and safer than before.
