Buying a Pram Newborn

Parents and caregivers can count on prams and pushchairs that can be versatile and multi-functional. They are the co-pilots of your child's new journey.

A pram for newborns is a must for newborns and babies and has a deep, sturdy carrycot with soft and secure walls.

A pram is typically equipped with a bassinet. However, it can be converted into a stroller seat when baby is ready.

Safety

Newborns should be protected as much as is possible. A stroller or pram that has safety features will keep your baby secure and comfortable while traveling. A stroller or pram must have a working break, a 5-point harness (2 shoulder straps; 2 waist straps; and an e-crotch belt) and a wrist tether for the person pushing it. Check that your chosen pram meets these standards before you purchase.

Find a pram that allows your baby to ride in the recommended lying-flat position. This position helps your baby and prevents the risk of a dangerous curve in their spine which could lead to spinal issues. By keeping the airways open, it lowers the risk for SUID (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or Asphyxiation). Most prams that are used from birth will have a seat unit that will recline into a lie-flat pram mode for younger babies and then convert into a pushchair pram seat unit for older children.

The suspension of the pram will determine how smooth it rides. A pram that has a lot of spring suspension will cost more however it is worth the extra expense when you intend to use your pram every day for a few years or more.

Always make sure to read the instruction manual thoroughly and examine the warning labels for your stroller compact or pram. You should also make sure that your stroller is parked in a safe spot away from bicycles, traffic or other hazards when it isn't being used. It is important to remove any bags or objects from the handles since they could cause your baby to get trapped or even suffocate.

A stroller or pram should not be left unattended with a baby inside, even if they are asleep. They could wiggle and get trapped, or the pram may slide away and the baby could be injured. Hanging bags or other objects on the handles isn't a good thing as they can fall and strike your child on the head.

Comfort

It is essential that newborns have the option of lying flat, as this promotes lung and back development. A lot of prams come with a cocoon or carrycot that creates a cozy nest-like space for your baby and is able to be removed from the frame. Others, such as the egg2's bucket-style seat, don't recline to lie flat, but offer a comfortable ride to your baby.

Some prams also feature an additional bassinet, infant inset or foldable stroller seat so you can easily change between sitting and sleeping modes according to your baby's needs. This is often called a 'travel system and is the first thing you should do with your baby.

Choose a stroller with two shoulder straps that are ideally padded and a five-point safety harness. It should fit your baby's body snugly. Check that there are no gaps or loose places where fingers could get caught. Also, make sure that the buckles are simple for older children to operate. It is also important to consider whether you want a pram that is oriented towards parents. It is ideal to keep an eye on your child and makes them feel more secure being able to see their parents.

Some prams, like the Graco Near2Me, have a nifty raise and lower feature that allows your baby to come right up to your face at the touch of a button, which our parents testers really loved! This is a great method of keeping eye contact with your baby and stay in contact, particularly when they're sleepy. If you're looking to purchase a travel system, be sure the frame's compatibility with the car capsule you've chosen and this will prevent the need to wake them up while changing between pram, car and back again.

Convenience

When purchasing a newborn pram, it is essential to consider your Baby Accessories's transport needs. Some prams include a bassinet, carrycot or a seat that reclines to an upright position. This is important to ensure your baby's spinal development and breathing. It is also a good idea to look at what other accessories the twin pram comes with like a changing bag and footmuff that are essential to keep your baby warm during colder weather.

Some strollers and prams can be converted to travel systems. You can connect a car pod to the frame with adaptors so that you can transfer your baby from the car to the pram without disturbing them. This is a great option if you have a busy life or don't have a sufficient space for prams, however it's worth keeping in mind that your baby will need to be old enough and able to sit up on their own before you can switch them from car capsule to pram.

Another feature you may want to keep an eye on is the possibility of raising and lowering the infant's seat from a low setting to a high setting, which allows you to maintain eye contact with them and keeps them close to you, something that our parent tester found was extremely useful for her 10-month-old boy! A good example is the Graco Near2Me that can be adjusted to lower the seat, allowing your baby to glide towards you with the push of an button and maintain constant eye contact.

You should also be able to keep bags for shopping and changing in the basket underneath. You should be able store shopping bags and changing bags underneath the pram (but be aware that too much weight can cause it to tip over). If you are unsure of what to choose, try out some different models at your local retailer.
