best robot for mopping floors vacuums eliminate pet hair, lint, and dust from the floor before they settle. They can also avoid stairs and other obstacles, including tippy furniture.

Most robotic vacuums require maintenance. This involves emptying the bin (and sometimes rinsing it) and wiping the sensors and cameras. They also need to be plugged in. Many come with smartphone applications for scheduling, adjusting setting and more.

Roomba 980 from iRobot

The iRobot Roomba 980 is the latest in the series of top-of-the-line robot cleaner vacuum cleaners that are a staple of every modern household. This model comes with a HEPA-filter to aid those suffering from allergies. It also has a large battery that can clean for two hours and returns to its dock automatically when the bin is full.

Smart mapping is a different feature that assists in identifying areas in your home that require attention and creates a cleaning path to get around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does a great job of maneuvering around toys that have been abandoned on the floor vacuum robot, or furniture legs that stick out of the ground. Roomba also has a sensor that will snap Roomba back to reality when it begins to wander away from its original position.

iRobot has also added an additional set of rollers beneath the Roomba that don't have bristles and are therefore more likely to avoid knots than earlier models. They're also a bit taller than previous rollers, and will fit better under beds and couches that are low and are designed to let this model move more easily on varying flooring types.

What sets the Roomba 980 apart from other models of this class, though, is its inclusion of a new dirt detection feature, which uses cameras to identify bits of embedded dirt. This is a great improvement over the previous model, which relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom cover method to bounce around the room and clean at least three times from different angles.

In our tests of its performance, the Roomba 980 did well on carpets and hard flooring. It scored extremely well on carpets with low pile and on mid-pile. It did a good job of picking up pet hair, but it was struggling with extremely thick and long pet fur that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the most efficient robots on our list despite the minor drawbacks. It's also not as expensive as top-of the-line models. It still has a lot of features we'd expect to see in a flagship model, but it doesn't have all the fancy apps or smart home integration you might find in other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and get working immediately. After taking off the yellow bin insert and pull tab from the undercarriage, you just plug it into a wall socket or its Home Base docking stations, press the "Clean button" and let it work. It will return to its dock when the battery runs out or it's stuffed with debris, and it also has indicators at the top to indicate when its bin is full, it requires recharging, or its Wi-Fi signal is not working.
