Optimus Nova
The Optimus Nova is a 8kw multi fuel stove-fuel stove that can be used with a variety of liquid fuels. It has a quick-priming burner as well as an aluminium pump that self-purges and a precise simmer control. Its low center of gravity and broad legs make it a stable, rock-solid stove. This makes it a great stove for backpacking groups, base camps, kayaking and Arctic camping.
The Optimus Nova is different from other liquid fuel stoves that have a problem with fuel that is not burned remaining in the fuel line or nozzle. This can be solved by flipping over the bottle. This disconnects the intake hose from the fuel, forcing it to suck air which smothers the flame and decreases the pressure of the bottle.
This is an ingenious solution to a long-standing problem, and it works. The Nova can be used with a variety of standard fuel bottles that seal using an o-ring, such as MSR bottles. It also comes with a full-featured stove bag that has separate pockets for spare parts, tools, lubricant and the fuel pump.
This is a great all round backpacking stove for use in the UK, particularly for expeditions in which a variety of fuels is essential. Its price is also very reasonable when compared to canister stoves that have similar capabilities. Moreover, the Optimus Nova is easy to maintain and a pleasure to use.
Kovea Hydra
Since 2010 since 2010, the Kovea Multi Fuel Stove has become a popular choice among backpackers. The Hydra isn't as well-known with UK backpackers any more Perhaps because they've caught up to better-known brands or the most recent lightweight options from China or Korea. But this doesn't mean that it's less effective.
It's a compact and light stove, burning all liquid fuels including white gas as well as propane butane with one nozzle. It's a pretty standard stove design, with the burner bell that is bolted to the body, which is then anchored by three fold out support legs. A pump sits on the top of the fuel hose, the generator loop goes around the inlet, and the flame spreader is situated above that. The burner itself is a low-speed flame type, which makes it a little less impacted by wind.
It's a versatile little cooker because it can be used with either propane canisters or isobutane canisters. It is easy to simmer with isobutane and propane and burns all fuels at a reasonable rate. However, when using white gas the stove is a little slower.
The instructions for the Hydra are written in English, but they were not written by native speakers of the language. The instructions warn against the use of certain types of lighter fluid that if used in a manner that is not what was intended, could cause an accident that could land Kovea in lots of legal hot water. However that, any 7/16ths UNEF threaded gas canister from a trusted brand should work just fine.
Primus OmniLite Ti
The Primus Omnilite Ti is a ideal choice for those who are looking for a multifuel stove that is able to cook using a variety of fuels. It can be powered by gas, petrol/gasoline or diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for each fuel type, and you can also alter the size of the flame. This stove also comes with a fuel line that sits flat on the ground and is easily connected to the tank.
While the Primus Omnilite is a fantastic stove, it does require maintenance to keep it working correctly. In particular, it has a tendency to flare during priming, which could be dangerous. This is a problem that is common to all stoves that use liquid fuel that use a second spindle on the stove end instead of a coil to vaporize the fuel.
Another issue is that it requires different jets for every type of fuel. This means that if you cook using kerosene, the jet hole has to be smaller than when using gas. This isn't a major issue but it's worth mentioning.
MSR Whisper Lite
The MSR Whisper Lite stove is one of the lightest, smallest and most affordable multi-fuel stoves. It is also very easy to repair in the field. It can run on either canister fuel or liquid gas and comes with attachments for both. The new design is 10percent lighter than its predecessor and the burner system has been redesigned for improved heat distribution. This is a great choice for backpackers with a limited budget or for beginners.
The whistler Lite takes a little time to prepare and prime, then boil water, but it is a reliable stove that will never disappoint you. The flame is extremely strong when turned to the max and will easily boil one liter of water in less than two minutes. The only drawback is that it's not as effective for simmering as other stoves.
This is the reason MSR has created the Dragonfly stove, which is a pot that can be used as a simmering stove. It has a similar design to the whistler, but is more compact and offers better performance. However it's not as inexpensive as the whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus cookset and stove is an excellent alternative, providing a similar setup for half the price. Whisperlite International and Universal can be utilized with isobutane. Both versions share the same basic design, however the Universal version is also compatible with canister fuel.
Coleman Sportster II
Like many Coleman stoves this is a basic unpretentious unit that will get the job done. It's compact, self-contained, and solid with the tank at the bottom and the burner on top. This makes it easy to use and a good choice for beginners, backpackers who want to cut weight, and those of us who have spares in the van.
Designed to burn Coleman's own exclusive fuel (naptha gas, also referred to as white gas), this stove can be used with unleaded gasoline as well. A gallon of gasoline will last for as longer as a standard Coleman liquid fuel cylinder, which means you'll save money on fuel by using this option.
Liquid fuel stoves have a steep learning curve, as you'll have to properly pressurize and prime them before you can get a nice blue flame going. If you get it wrong the fuel could spill out, splash beyond the burner, or even sputter. To get the hang of this, practice outside before your excursion.
The stove may lose some performance and odor of the flame efficiency if you use non-Coleman fuels. However, this is a trade-off for its versatility. Be sure to buy unleaded gas, and not one that's enriched with alcohol or methanol. These types of fuel can cause the unit's performance to decline and even explode.

This can also increase the overall weight. The newer types of multifuel stoves have discovered an option to use the same nozzle to ignite multiple fuels which is much easier. The newer models of these stoves are referred to as 'hybrid' or 'compressed multifuel stoves'. there are many names for them like isobutane canister fuel, white gas, kerosene and unleaded car gasoline/petrol.
