1. Engine Speed Sensor
The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.
If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It's a bit tricky to test as there are several connector pins, and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.
I'm not certain what to do, i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80, 100 200, Audi Replacement Keys UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to an engine shut down.
A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire in the gear. It is likely that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. The good news is they are very affordable and easily accessible particularly if you're looking at the Bosch sensor, like ours. Alternately, GM's version this component is an option.
5. Tachometer
A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your car. There should be the resistance to be around 1000 ohms in these areas.
