As time passes the door handle could become loose or feel loose. It could also begin to look old and worn. This is an indication that it's time for a replacement.

One of the first signs that your door handle requires replacing is when it becomes difficult to operate. This is a serious issue because you won't be capable of locking or unlocking the door which could put you and your family at risk.

It's also a good idea to replace the handle on your door if it is damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be dangerous, especially for children and elderly family members who might struggle to open it. They could become trapped. It's easy to fix a damaged handle on doors.

Modern door handles are typically standard sizes and will fit any door. If you aren't certain that the new door handle you are buying will work, remove the old one and take measurements of its holes in the housing. This will help you buy the right door handle.

The easiest method to remove the handle from your door is to take it off of the door itself. Usually it is a matter of using a screwdriver. Some door handles have an enclosure plate that hides the screws used to mount them. You'll need to remove this to get to the screws. Once you've removed your old handle, make a note of how the spindle is attached to ensure that you can be sure to align it when you install your new one.

You can also remove the door handle by depressing the latch mechanism. This is usually done with an screwdriver however you'll need to locate the small latch, which is located on the edge of the trim piece. Once you've removed the latch, you can take the handle off the strike plate and then remove the latch from the door edge.

You'll need to replace the latch plate when you replace the handle. This is the plate that holds the hole through which the latch for the door is inserted when the door closes. The new handles will come with two latch plates which are a circular and a rectangular plate (see the image above which illustrates the components of the door handle). If you have an old rectangular latch plate, replace it with a circular one. This will let the latch hook onto the strike plate, making the handle more convenient.

The first step is to take off the screw that holds the latch plate. The screws are usually quite tight and require a bit of force to loosen them. If possible, it may be beneficial to have a second person assist you with this task.

After the screws are removed the latch should slide out of the door with ease. If it's stuck or won't move then use a small nail file to scratch around the edges of the latch plate. This will sometimes free the plate up.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate for installation. Utilizing the screws made of wood that came with the new handles, screw the latch plate onto the inside of the doorjamb. Do not overtighten your screws as this can cause damage to the strike plate.

If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in its correct position, close and open the door to determine whether it latches and closes correctly. If it doesn't, you'll need to adjust the strike plate either up or down, or forward or back until the door shuts and latches correctly.

If the door is still moving or jiggles, you may need to increase the size of your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more common with older doors, but could be due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are too narrow or not the right size for the latch, or from damaged or broken strike plate. If this is the case, use a metal filing instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Take off the Latch

The latch is an angled metal piece that slides into and out of a hole on the inside of your upvc door handle. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward which allows you to open the door. It also connects to a hole in the frame of the door to keep the door shut. If your door is wiggles when you close it, replacing the latch could be all you need to fix it.

The screws that hold the door latch are hard to spot however, you can insert a screwdriver into a small hole in the trim plate and then pry the latch off. You may need to repeat this several times before the latch becomes loose enough to allow it to be pulled out.

It should be possible to slide the new latch into its slot without any problems after you have removed the old one. Use your new screws to secure the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it's correctly positioned in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers.
