How to unlock Your Vehicle
Modern electronic key fobs offer superior convenience and performance to a traditional manual key. However, they do require batteries that will eventually wear out and will need to be replaced. If your Volvo keyfob only functions intermittently, your battery might be dying and you will require replacement soon.
Fortunately, there are simple steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery on your own. Choose a clean surface to work on. Then, arrange all of the tools you'll need. Find the battery hatch, and ensure that it is set to "open." Use a flathead screwdriver, coin or a similar tool to open the hatch to open. Then, carefully pull out the battery by lifting the side closest to the hook for the key-ring. Wear rubber gloves to protect the electronic contact surfaces.
Insert the new battery into the socket after the previous one has been removed. Make sure that the positive side is facing up and that it's seated within all clips. Slide the cover downwards towards the key-ring portion until it is loose and slides off. Then, take off the cover to reveal the key blade hidden inside. It can be used to unlock your car from the driver's doors when you've lost or broken the key fob.
How to Start Your Vehicle

Pressing the unlock button once will disengage the alarm and unlock the driver's side door. If you press it again and you will be able to unlock all the doors and tailgate. The unlock button can also be used to roll down the windows on an extremely hot day or to let fresh air in prior to getting behind the wheel. If you're looking for more than that, the key fob could also be used to activate ERS, which can start the vehicle's climate control system and warm or cool it to the preferred temperature setting when the vehicle is parked.
How to Replace the Battery
If your key fob no longer locks or unlocks your vehicle it is possible that it is time to replace the battery. It's simple and requires just a small flathead screwdriver or plastic pry bar tool. Find the small slot houses the backup or emergency key for ignition made of metal. Place the blade of a screwdriver tool into this slot and gently push the rear of the fob open. After the fob is open you can locate the CR2032 3V battery and remove it. Replace the battery, then snap to the fob.
Note: Some older Volvos are powered by a different kind of battery one called the CR2025. CR2025 batteries have a thickness of 7 tenths one millimeter lower than a CR2032, so you'll need to be extra cautious when replacing your battery.
